Science

All Bellevue students participate in a pull-out lab-based science program from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Students engage in the scientific process through hands-on experimentation.

On any given day in the science room, 6th graders might be analyzing the effects of surplus carbon dioxide on the air temperature in a controlled environment while kindergarteners are learning about adaptations by figuring out which color toothpicks are best adapted to the environment of the grass. When 2/3 students come in, they may analyze real fossils to glean some information about the organisms that left those traces behind. 4/5 students might be using electricity

supplies to create a circuit that can power an electromagnet. The topics are diverse and change from grade to grade, but the overall approach remains committed to experiential learning grounded in scientific method.

In addition to all of the science content we cover, students are presented with multiple engineering challenges each year in which they learn about the iterative approach of the engineering design process by actually designing and building things to satisfy a goal or constraint. These engineering challenges are frenetic, creative, and rich with learning opportunities.
