Writing: How to Write a Summary with Transition Words (Author’s Journal), How to respond to a Lit Response Question (Literature Response Journal)— Tuesday supported independent practice

Greetings from Your Teacher

Dear Families,

Thank you for taking the time to meet as a team last week. When I reflect back to the time spent with all of you, I realize what a solid parental support network my students have. This is not typical of most schools. Thank you for valuing education yourselves and making it a priority in your child’s life. I feel that the goals set last week will be easy for me to observe, continually refer to, monitor here in the classroom and have great value.

This week, starting on Monday, we will begin to build our Region Brochures. Your child will be using the notes he or she finished last week to build travel brochures enticing visitors to visit his or her region. This will be our first introduction into persuasive writing. To help support the building of persuasive paragraphs on climate, national parks, industries, etc., we will be using persuasive sentence frames which will be located in your child’s Author’s Journal. Also to assist the writing in this project, I will be going over summary writing and the use of transitions within paragraphs. A paragraph will be made for each researched area in notes. Finally illustrations will be created by hand (tracing is fine) to accompany the information contained in each section of the brochure. Actually drawing the pictures rather than coping and pasting allows for a more artistic piece. Plus I feel the ownership will be greater as well. Please ask to see your child’s progress on the brochure this week.

We will be truly starting our study of Island of the Blue Dolphins this week. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be days set aside to read, respond and study this piece of literature. Scott O’Dell is a fantastic historical fiction writer. We will be using this piece of literature to build background on the Chumash culture that presided on the Channel Islands and to start the discussion of European interests in the West Coasts. I hope you are able to read along with us this week. We started reading chapter 1 last week and will continue reading chapters 2-4. It is a slow start but Holly and I find it important to model what a complete, quality lit response looks like and what it truly means to absorb nutrients from “hamburger “books. (You’ll have to ask your child to explain.) This will be an excellent time for you to have your child explain the use of the Lit Journal and what quality Lit Responses look like. As a reminder, fifth graders must include supportive quotes for each response question.

Just a reminder that parent chaperone applications are in the office for pick up and completion. We would like to have these returned to classroom teacher no later than Friday, October 3rd. I know it seems like a tedious task but over the years, has helped us build great parental teams. If you feel that your child is not ready for this overnight field trip, we understand a support your decision. We will arrange for him or her to join another forum and have independent work to complete during our absence.

This week I will be sending home the University plan sheet for those of you that indicated an interest. I would love to have these plans back ASAP, no later than Monday, October 6th. jsennes@bsfcs.org
