Dear Parents,
We had a great time last week
creating relief maps of the United States – we went through quite a bit of
salt and flour, but most of it made it onto the boxes for the maps! This week we will continue our study of U.S.
Geography and Native Americans. We are about half-way through Racing the Sun,
the novel we are reading in class together.
Reading
University/Book Club
The children are doing a great job
choosing interesting books to read for their book club projects. Several
students are working on completing their first projects, and a couple have
already turned one in. All students should complete at least one project by the
end of this month.
Please support your child by
encouraging him/her to read nightly to meet his/her goals. All students must have a book to read at
school as well.
Spelling
This week’s spelling rule is “The
Final Y Rule”
1.
If a root word
ends in a consonant and then y,
change the y to i before all suffixes except those already beginning with i – (e.g. tried, trying)
2.
If a root word
ends in a vowel and then y, do not
change the y – (e.g. prayed, payment)
3.
Of course,
there are exceptions to this rule, so we will go over those in class!
PLEASE – be
sure that the spelling list for each week stays in your child’s binder. They
will need this each day for homework and also in school.
Native
American Poster Reports
This week we
are working in cooperative groups to complete reports on various Native
American Tribes. Each group will study a specific tribe in depth and create a
poster presentation on it. Your child has a specific task to complete within
his or her group. Outside resources are welcome!
King
Tut
Our field trip
to see the King Tut exhibit at LACMA is coming up next month. We have 5 adult
chaperone spots available. Please let me know if you are interested in coming
along on this trip. We will be taking charter buses down to LA, stopping for
dinner on the return trip.
Buddies
We had fun
last week getting to know the children in Yellow Forum. We will be big buddies
to Kindergarten and will get together with them 2 or 3 times a month.
Homework
Please continue to support your
child in returning daily homework assignments. If textbooks or class reading
books come home for homework, please be sure your child returns them the next
day.
