Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School

Student Behavior Expectations and Discipline Plan

At Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School we strive to instill in each student the desire and the ability to do the right thing in every situation.  We believe that all students have the potential for behaving positively and that students choose and are responsible for their behaviors.  We take seriously our responsibility to thoughtfully guide and teach students to make appropriate choices.  To this end we have developed this behavior expectations and discipline plan.

What is expected from students?

As a student at Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School you are expected to do the right thing in every situation and you are encouraged to actively protect the rights of others.  This will require you to think before you act and be aware of what is going on around you.  If every student does this we can all enjoy a school where there is trust, respect and safety.

Rather than a long list of do’s and don’ts we feel it is more effective to outline our expectations in general principles.  At Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School students are expected to:

Ø     Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Ø     Be sensitive to other’s feelings.

Ø     Refrain from physically hurting each other.

Ø     Use appropriate and respectful language. (If in doubt don’t say it.)

Ø     Be on time to school and prepared to learn.

Ø     Listen to and respond appropriately to the adults and others at school.

Ø      Respect yourself, others and school property.

Ø      Be safe.

What discipline procedures will be followed?

We believe that discipline procedures should be based on what is ultimately best for the student and should reflect options that permit a wide range of logical, related and reasonable consequences.  Should a student choose to violate any of the expectations outlined in the previous section or in any way disrupt the educational program at school they will receive a written discipline referral that will outline the details of the misbehavior and serve to document the disciplinary action taken.  Once the appropriate discipline has been completed, the referral will be mailed home and a copy forwarded to the student’s teacher.

In working through a situation where a student has not behaved appropriately, the action taken will depend on the severity of the act and whether it has occurred previously.  The following list represents possible consequences that may be used in the event of inappropriate student behavior:

Ø     Conference – (peer/peer, teacher/student, principal/student, or adult/student)

Ø     Cool Down/Reflective Time

Ø     Loss of Privileges

Ø     Replacement or Repair of Property

Ø     Call Home

Ø     Apology

Ø      Suspension

In extreme cases of misbehavior or as a result of recurring negative behavior a student may be dismissed from attendance at Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School.  Decisions regarding the expulsion of a student will be made in consultation with the Governing Board, Principal and Teacher.  Consideration will be given to the student’s behavior history as well as policies outlined by Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School and California Education Code.

What about the majority of students who make good choices?

At Bellevue-Santa Fe School we are fortunate to have a vast majority of well-behaved, respectful and considerate students.  Doing the right thing is intrinsically rewarding and results in a peaceful campus and positive learning environment.  We believe it is important to consistently recognize students when they are doing exceptional acts.

Conclusion

It is the intent of this plan to establish and build a school community where all individuals are valued and respected.  It is important that a school is organized and orderly and all students know what is expected of them and what the consequences may be.  We believe that students benefit directly from the discipline process when parents and staff work together.
