GENERAL INFORMATION
Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School began teaching its first students on September 5, 1996. It was the 93rd charter school approved by the State Board of Education. BSFCS is a K-6 elementary school which provides a world class learning experience for 150 students, and is located in the beautiful Avila Valley, just outside San Luis Obispo, California, and two miles from Avila Beach.
A charter school allows for unprecedented flexibility in the creation and presentation of education and curriculum materials to students. Charter school law requires that all students are assessed annually to ensure that the instruction they are receiving is effective. BSFCS students are tested each year in order to monitor growth.
The school is home to a 1900 square foot hands-on science museum, a student garden, and has each classroom linked to the internet. The school has formed corporate partnerships with Charter Pipeline and Unocal.
BSFCS students are grouped into non-traditional multi-grade classes called "Forums". Orange, Yellow, Blue and Red Forums constitute the K-3 levels. The curriculum in K-3 is highly grounded in the mastery of basic skills. A Phonics based Language Arts program is emphasized, and Standards based Mathematics is implemented.
Purple, Green and Bronze Forums are grades 4-6. These forums stress the basic skills, but those students showing mastery begin independent learning and individualized projects. In addition to continuing Math and Language Arts instruction, a strong Science and Global Studies program is in place.
